The Common Cold (Rhinovirus)

Virus Facts

Viruses may take over the mammalian cell for reproductions but their nutritional needs are not the same. Like Herpes viruses, Rhinoviruses need a common amino acid - arginine. Deprive cells of this amino acid and replication slows.

Amino Acid Attack

How can you deprive your cells of arginine? There are two ways.

  • Reduce your arginine intake

  • Compete with arginine availability

Reducing Arginine

The easiest way to reduce your arginine intake is to avoid foods high in this amino acid. Foods high in arginine include:

  • Chocolate :-(
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Seeds
  • Cereal grains
  • Gelatin
  • Raisins

Compete with Arginine

Lysine competes with arginine in the human body. A high intake of lysine makes arginine less bioavailable to your cells and thus to the virus.

An easy way to increase your intake of lysine is to eat foods high in lysine. Some of these foods are:

  • Red meat
  • Fish
  • Dairy products
  • Beans, peas, lentils
